For the past year or so, I’ve been involved in answering questions for a Storyworth Book. With that project finished, my thoughts have gone back to my top dresser drawer. I recently came across a major document from my past in that drawer. At the bottom, in an old manilla envelope was my application to the Selective Service Administration for conscientious objector status. The pages are actually masters for a mimeograph machine. Each page is separated by leaf resembling onion or parchment paper. The bluish purple ink from the mimeograph machine blurs each letter, so I re-typed it. I really wanted to edit my writing, but I resisted. I reproduced the pages as an historical document. I felt I couldn’t just put this up on this web site without first putting it into historical context. So, soon, I will post it with a preface that explains my state of mind at the time. Stay tuned, especially if you are interested in history from our 1970’s. More stories will follow.
I was, as you were, in the ‘69 draft. My ping pong ball was drawn at #266. JCancelled my plans to relocate to Cañada. – Joel
