Clarence’s Return

Story told by
Lucy Aldrich Moorhead Roland, 1972

Clarence returned to Hughson after serving in Russia during WW I. At this time, Ethel and Lucy were still at home. They shared a bedroom, even though there was plenty of room for each of them to now have their own room. Lucy remembers waking up in the middle of the night to hear Clarence screaming from some nightmare. Abe would go in and talk to his son and calm him down. Also, for quite awhile after he returned, shrapnel would work its way out of his body. Clarence had the nightmares and the ever escaping shrapnel but he didn’t talk much about his war experiences.
