Pearl and Elmer were married on Thanksgiving in 1914. It is possible that Wilbur hadn’t even asked Lulu yet. Lulu was upset because the younger sister was getting married first and she was afraid she was going to be left out. There is a picture of the four of them at Pearl and Elmer’s wedding because Lulu and Wilbur were the maid of honor and best man. There was not a double wedding. Notice the hairdo on Pearl in this picture and compare it to her formal wedding picture.
In 1972, I, Donna Swagerty Shreve, was visiting my grandfather, Elmer and he was going over family pictures with me. He didn’t know that Grandma had also shown me their wedding picture and had explained that she had never liked her wedding picture because her hair was all messed up. Elmer had driven them over to the photographer after the wedding in an open car. As Pearl was trying to salvage her hairdo, Elmer insisted on getting the pictures taken. Years later when Elmer showed me the wedding picture he mentioned Pearl’s hair looked funny. In tribute to my grandma, I let out my best imitation of Pearl’s scream and told him why her hair was funny looking.
