Pearl Helping with the Dairy

Story told to Donna Swagerty Shreve by Elmer Swagerty, 1972

Elmer and Pearl on their dairy farm in Escalon

For some reason Elmer needed help with a cow in the dairy and no one was available to help him but Pearl. He asked her to come help him and she reluctantly left her project in the kitchen to assist. Pearl didn’t spend any time in the barn and was not familiar with certain basic routines and certainly, didn’t want to learn now. When one works with large animals one of the first things one learns is to not walk closely around the back of the animal if possible. Pearl needed to get to the other side of the cow and she walked right behind the cow as the cow chose to relieve herself. Pearl got splattered from head to foot with cow manure.Pearl threw up her hands, screamed, and ran off to the house to clean up. Elmer said it took all of the self control he could muster not to laugh at the sight. He didn’t dare however because he would never have had her as a helper again if he did.
